The candle flickered, its flame dancing with an unsteady grace that mirrored Elara’s own heart. It wasn't a normal candle, not by a long shot. It was a pale, waxy thing, tinged with an odd, almost pearlescent sheen, and it had been nestled amongst Great Aunt Maeve’s letters, a silent companion to their faded ink. Elara had lit it on a whim, a desperate attempt to coax more warmth into the dusty attic air, but its light seemed to possess a peculiar quality. It cast shadows that writhed and stretched, not quite like ordinary shadows, and it hummed with a faint, almost inaudible vibration.

She held it closer to the latest letter, a brittle sheet covered in Maeve’s elegant, spidery script. The words spoke of a hidden path, a place where "the roots of the old ones drink from the silent stream." Elara frowned, tracing the words with her finger. What did it mean? Was it a real place, or just a riddle? As the candle’s glow washed over the parchment, something shifted. Faint, almost invisible lines began to appear on the page, overlaid upon Maeve’s writing like a watermark. They weren't ink; they seemed to shimmer into existence, swirling and coalescing into symbols Elara didn't recognize.

She gasped, pulling the candle back. The lines vanished instantly. Hesitantly, she brought the flame closer again. There they were, clearer this time. They looked like ancient runes, symbols of a forgotten language. The candle, it seemed, was a key. A key to unlocking hidden messages, to revealing the secrets woven into the very fabric of Maeve's words.
