The edge of the Whispering Woods loomed before Joy Joel, a curtain of emerald and deep shadow. Sunlight dappled through the dense canopy, painting shifting patterns on the mossy ground. The air, usually alive with the chirping of birds and the hum of insects, seemed hushed here, as if holding its breath. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves, and it sounded like a thousand tiny voices whispering secrets, hence the name. Joy Joel took a deep breath, the scent of damp earth and pine needles filling his lungs. He clutched the small, worn satchel his mother had packed for him, its contents a meager but precious collection of dried fruit, a waterskin, and a smooth, grey stone for comfort. Rose’s pale face flashed in his mind, her laughter silenced by the strange sickness, and his resolve hardened. He stepped under the first towering trees, and the world outside the familiar village faded away.

The path, if it could be called that, wound deeper into the woods. Ancient trees, their bark gnarled like the faces of old men, stood sentinel, their branches reaching high into the sky, entwined like a protective embrace. Ferns unfurled their delicate fronds, and wild berries, plump and dark, hung from thorny bushes. Joy Joel kept his eyes peeled, not for berries, but for any sign of the path, any indication that others had trod this way before. The whispers of the woods seemed to follow him, a low murmur that was both eerie and somehow soothing. He imagined the trees themselves were speaking, sharing stories of the past, of the creatures that dwelled within their shade.

After what felt like a long walk, though the sun had barely shifted in the sky, he heard it. A cheerful, bubbling sound, distinct from the rustling leaves. It grew louder as he pushed aside a curtain of trailing ivy, and then he saw it. A brook. It wasn’t a raging river, but it was wider than any stream he’d ever crossed back home. The water, clear and sparkling, tumbled over smooth, grey stones, its cheerful gurgle a stark contrast to the quiet solemnity of the woods. Joy Joel’s heart sank a little. He hadn’t anticipated this. He’d envisioned walking, perhaps climbing a small hill, but not this watery barrier.
