Chapter 15
The Archivist's Strategy
Elara uses her archivist's mind, recalling details from the diary and her own experiences. She devises a plan to trap the shadow entity by manipulating the portal's energy, using its own hunger against it.
Elara traced the worn leather cover of the journal, her fingers finding familiar comfort in its texture. The ancestor’s script, so like her own in its neat, deliberate loops, seemed to whisper encouragement across the years. Chapter 14 had left her breathless, the raw power of the void, the terrifying hunger of the shadow, still a tremor beneath her skin. But now, with the journal open on her desk, illuminated by the soft glow of her reading lamp, a different kind of energy began to hum within her. It was the quiet, steady thrum of an archivist’s mind at work, piecing together fragments, finding patterns, building understanding from disparate facts.
She’d spent the morning in a whirlwind of activity, her small apartment a flurry of papers and half-forgotten trinkets. The shadow had been a maelstrom of pure want, a void that threatened to swallow everything. But the ancestor’s words… *“Its hunger is its weakness. It craves what it cannot digest, and in that craving, it can be contained.”* Contained. The word resonated, a soothing balm to her frayed nerves.
Elara’s gaze drifted to the Murphy bed, currently tucked snugly against the wall, its sleek, unassuming façade hiding its extraordinary nature. It was the gateway, the anchor, and now, she realized, it could be the trap. She remembered the fleeting glimpses, the way the light shifted, the very air in her room seemed to thicken when the shadow was near. It was as if the portal itself pulsed with a raw, untamed energy, an energy the shadow yearned to consume.
