The air in Elara’s apartment crackled, not with static electricity, but with something far older, far more potent. The wall behind the folded Murphy bed, usually a canvas for fleeting glimpses of history, pulsed with an unsettling darkness. It wasn’t the soft twilight of a Parisian café or the sun-drenched warmth of a Victorian garden anymore. This was a void, a hungry emptiness that seemed to swallow the light from her reading lamp. Elara clutched the smooth, cool surface of the temporal anchor, a small, intricately carved wooden bird that had landed in her palm after a particularly dizzying trip to a medieval marketplace.

“You can’t stop me,” a voice slithered from the encroaching darkness, a sound like dry leaves skittering across stone. It was the Shadowy Figure, no longer a fleeting silhouette but a tangible presence, coalescing from the deepest part of the wall. Its form was indistinct, a roiling mass of shadow shot through with tiny, malevolent pinpricks of light, like a starless night sky given malevolent life.

Elara’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. She had faced glimpses of danger before, felt the chill of an unseen watcher, but this… this was direct. This was the void made manifest, and it was staring right at her. “What do you want?” she managed, her voice a thin thread against the growing pressure in the room.
