The air in the Kaunas archives always held a special kind of quiet, a hushed reverence for the stories sleeping within the dusty pages. Danguolė loved this quiet. It was a different kind of quiet than the one under the vast, star-dusted sky she sometimes dreamed of, but it was a quiet that hummed with secrets. Today, however, the familiar hum felt a little… off. A faint tremor ran beneath the surface of her thoughts, like a tiny pebble dropped into a still pond, sending ripples outward.
She traced the spine of a brittle book, its title long faded into illegibility. For so long, she had imagined herself as Solomon, the wise king, knowing all the answers, understanding every riddle. The thought had been a warm cloak, a solid foundation. But lately, a strange, persistent feeling had begun to whisper at the edges of her mind, a tiny, insistent voice that said, you are not Solomon anymore. It wasn't a loud voice, not a shout, but a soft, persistent hum, like the distant whirring of the astronomical machines she sometimes pictured in her dreams.
Danguolė paused, her fingers stilling on the worn leather. She looked around the cavernous room, at the towering shelves filled with the accumulated wisdom of ages. Was it possible? Could the cloak of Solomon she’d so confidently worn begin to feel too loose, too large? A shiver, not of cold but of something else entirely, traced its way down her spine. It was a disquieting thought, like finding a familiar path suddenly overgrown with unfamiliar vines.
