Chapter 14
The Shifting Constellations
Just as stars shift and form new patterns, Danguolė accepts that her sense of self is fluid, dynamic, and ever-changing.
The starlight, that ancient, shimmering dust that Danguolė loved so much, was always moving. Even from her window, looking up at the vast, inky canvas of the night sky, she could see it. The familiar patterns, the constellations her father had taught her, seemed to stretch and bend, to rearrange themselves in slow, grand dances across the heavens. It was like watching a story unfold, a story written in light, a story that was never quite the same from one night to the next.
And wasn't that just like her? Danguolė mused, tracing the condensation on the cool glass. She remembered a time, not so long ago it felt, when she had been so sure of herself. She had imagined herself as a wise old Solomon, someone who knew all the answers, who could unravel any mystery with a flick of her wrist. She had felt so solid, so complete. But now, there was a strange, fluttering feeling in her chest, like a tiny bird trapped behind her ribs, telling her that Solomon was a costume she had outgrown. The wise pronouncements felt hollow, the certainty a brittle shell.
It was the gazelle, of course, that had started it all. That flash of emerald and sapphire, a creature woven from dreams and starlight, had appeared one hazy afternoon in the quietest corner of the Kaunas archives. It hadn't made a sound, not a rustle of leaves, not a snap of a twig, yet it had been there, shimmering with an inner luminescence. And then, it had sung. Or, rather, its song had seeped into Danguolė’s very bones, a melody of shifting hues, of untold secrets, of possibilities that unfurled like silken banners. It was a song that whispered of Scheherazade, the legendary storyteller who held a kingdom captive with her words, weaving tales that danced on the edge of life and death.
