The air in the village square, usually thick with the scent of baking bread and drying herbs, now crackled with a different kind of tension. It was the kind that made the stray dogs whine and the old men pull their cloaks tighter, even in the afternoon sun. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I could hear the shouts, the heavy thud of boots on cobblestones, and the terrified bleating of a goat that had stumbled in their path. They were here. The Obsidian Hand. Silas Vane’s men.
Lyra. Where was Lyra? She was supposed to be my diversion, a shield of chaos to give me precious minutes to melt into the shadows beyond the village walls. My gaze darted frantically towards the small bakery, her usual haunt. Nothing but a swirl of dust and the glint of polished metal. Had they reached her already? Had her bravery, her fierce loyalty, led her straight into their grasping hands?
A cold knot of dread tightened in my stomach. I had to know. Pushing aside the instinct to flee, to prioritize my own escape, I edged closer to the edge of the fountain’s cool spray, hiding behind a cluster of overflowing terracotta pots. The sounds of pursuit were growing closer, a wave of dark energy washing over our peaceful village.
