The rough wool of my tunic scratched against my skin, a constant reminder of the life I’d left behind. The familiar scent of drying herbs and woodsmoke was gone, replaced by the sharp, clean smell of pine and damp earth. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, a frantic rhythm that echoed the urgency of my flight. Behind me, the village of Oakhaven, my home, was a fading memory, its cobblestone streets and sun-drenched walls swallowed by the encroaching forest. Lyra’s tearful goodbye, her small, determined face a blur of worry, was etched into my mind. She didn’t understand, not really, but her belief in me, her desperate plea for me to be careful, had been a lifeline.
The symbol, the serpent coiled around a spindle, pulsed faintly in my mind, a silent, insistent hum. It had appeared on my loom, a mark of something ancient and powerful, a prophecy whispered through generations. And now, it was the reason I was running, the reason Silas Vane and his Obsidian Hand hounds were breathing down my neck. They wanted the power, the ability to twist fate, and they saw me as their key.
My fingers twitched, itching for the familiar feel of yarn, the smooth glide of the shuttle. Instead, they clenched into fists, raw and blistered from clinging to roots and scrambling over rocks. My grandmother’s words, spoken in hushed tones beside the dying embers of the hearth, echoed in my ears. *“The threads of destiny are not for the grasping, child. They are for the weaving, with patience and with heart.”* Patience. Heart. Right now, all I had was fear and a desperate need to survive.
