Fleeing her home, Elara discovers a hidden compartment containing her grandmother's journal. Cryptic symbols and faded maps hint at a hidden sanctuary, a place of refuge and ancient knowledge.
The rough cobbles of the village path scraped against my bare feet as I ran, the familiar scent of woodsmoke and drying herbs now laced with the acrid tang of fear. Behind me, the shouts of the Obsidian Hand members echoed, their heavy boots a thunderous counterpoint to my frantic heart. Lyra’s tearful goodbye, her whispered pleas for me to be careful, still clung to me like the dust I kicked up with every desperate stride. I didn’t dare look back. I couldn’t.
My grandmother’s cottage, usually a haven of warmth and the comforting click-clack of her loom, now felt like a cage I had narrowly escaped. The symbol, that impossible spiral etched into the wood of my own loom, a symbol I’d seen only in the hushed stories of village elders, had been the final, terrifying confirmation. It was real. The prophecy, the one I’d always thought was just a fanciful tale to scare children, was coming true, and I was its unwilling center.
I burst through the low, arched gateway that marked the edge of our village, the familiar olive groves stretching out before me like a welcoming, yet now menacing, sea of silver-green. The sun, usually a friendly companion, felt too bright, too revealing. Every rustle of leaves, every distant bleat of a goat, sent a fresh wave of panic through me. They would be looking for me. Silas Vane, his cold, calculating gaze burned into my memory from that brief, terrifying encounter in the agora, would not rest.
