His spirit, once a flame that flickered with defiance, now lay smoldering, choked by the ashes of regret and the crushing weight of his confinement. Then, the grids had arrived. A small, unassuming book, tucked between the meager rations and the worn blanket. Guard Thorne, his face a mask of impassive cynicism, had tossed it onto his cot with a grunt that might have been amusement or indifference. Elias had barely registered its presence, his mind too consumed by the suffocating reality of his surroundings. Another distraction, he’d thought, a cruel jest in a place where laughter died before it could take flight. He’d shoved it aside, the crisp pages a stark contrast to the rough texture of his life.
But boredom, a relentless beast in the sterile quiet of his cell, was a powerful motivator. It gnawed at him, a dull, persistent hunger that no amount of gruel could satisfy. He found himself drawn back to the book, the stark black lines of the Sudoku grids a strange allure. He’d never been one for puzzles, his mind more accustomed to the labyrinthine pathways of his own thoughts. Yet, in the desperate search for an escape, any escape, he’d picked it up.
