Chapter 6
Thorne's Shadow
Guard Thorne, a cynical figure, observes Elias's engagement with the puzzles. Thorne's jaded demeanor offers a stark contrast to Elias's nascent journey, embodying the prison's unyielding system.
Guard Thorne’s heavy boots echoed on the concrete, each thud a punctuation mark in the suffocating silence of the cell block. He moved with a practiced, almost languid grace, his gaze sweeping over the inmates as if cataloging them for some unseen inventory. Most were hunched figures, shadows lost in the grey expanse of their existence, their faces etched with a weariness that went bone-deep. But Elias… Elias was different. Thorne had noticed it a few days ago, a subtle shift in the man’s posture, a flicker of something other than despair in his perpetually downcast eyes.
He paused outside Elias’s cell, the metal bars a stark barrier between the observer and the observed. Elias was hunched over his small, chipped table, a worn Sudoku book open before him. The flickering fluorescent light above cast long, dancing shadows, making the numbers on the page seem to writhe and shift. Thorne leaned against the cold, unforgiving wall, his arms crossed, a faint, almost imperceptible smirk playing on his lips. He’d seen it all in this place, the endless parade of broken souls, the desperate attempts to find meaning in the meaningless. Sudoku. It was a new one.
Elias’s brow was furrowed in concentration, his tongue peeking out slightly between his lips. His fingers, once accustomed to the rough texture of his past life, now traced the faint lines of the grid, searching for the elusive logic. The frustration was still there, Thorne could see it in the tension of Elias’s shoulders, but it was now mingled with something else – a quiet persistence. He’d seen Elias toss the book aside in disgust more than once, heard the soft, guttural curses that escaped his lips. But he always picked it up again.
