Financially Rewarded
The scent of freshly baked bread, still warm from the oven, always brought a smile to Kai’s face. It was a comforting aroma that filled their small kitchen, a familiar anchor in a world that had recently become a dizzying whirlwind of codes, addresses, and whispered secrets. Today, however, the bread was merely a backdrop to the serious discussion happening at the table. Alex, their parent, had spread out a large map of the world, dotted with colourful pins and a few scribbled notes in Alex’s neat, precise handwriting. Kai, perched on a stool, traced a line from Yiwu, China, all the way to Istanbul, Turkey, their finger hovering over a tiny speck of a country tucked away in Eastern Europe.
“So,” Kai began, their voice soft but clear, “if the sticker helped Mr. Petrov find his missing cat, and Mrs. Dubois find her lost locket, what exactly does this… ‘Global Network’ do?” Kai’s eyes, wide with a child’s earnest curiosity, met Alex’s. The question hung in the air, heavy with the weight of all the unanswered mysteries they had encountered.
Alex leaned back in their chair, a thoughtful expression on their face. The usual sharp, focused intensity in their eyes was softened by a hint of wonder. “That’s the million-dollar question, Kai. It’s not just about lost pets or misplaced jewellery, though those seem to be the entry points. It’s… bigger than that.” Alex tapped a pin on the map, this one marking a small village in the Amazon rainforest. “The sticker, the codes, the addresses… they’re all carefully placed breadcrumbs. They lead people who are truly in trouble, people who have nowhere else to turn, to help.”
