The Elder’s words echoed in her mind, a steady rhythm against the rustle of leaves and the distant calls of unseen birds. “The Guardian of Nature,” she had said, “resides where the oldest roots drink from the deepest springs. Hana clutched the woven pouch at her side, its contents a simple assortment of dried berries and a smooth, river-worn stone her mother had given her years ago. Her heart fluttered, not with the usual vibrant burst of colors she was accustomed to, but with a nervous tremor, a pale lavender tinged with the grey of uncertainty.
