A Friendship Takes Flight
Lily tucked another crayon behind her ear, her tongue poking out in concentration as she sketched the intricate pattern of a wrought-iron balcony. The city hummed around her – the rumble of trams, the chatter of shoppers, the distant cry of a street vendor. But for Lily, the world often narrowed to the tip of her pencil and the vibrant hues that spilled from her imagination. She was still a little shy, her voice a quiet murmur against the city’s roar, but with Sparkle by her side, things felt… different.
Sparkle, perched on a nearby stool Lily had ‘borrowed’ from a quiet cafe, swayed gently, its button eyes seeming to follow Lily’s every stroke. The doll, a riot of crimson fabric, sapphire ribbons, and sunshine-yellow yarn hair, was Lily’s constant companion. It had appeared one drizzly afternoon, a splash of impossible color against the grey pavement, and had danced with an unexplainable grace, drawing Lily out of her shell with every twirl. Now, they were a familiar sight: Lily with her sketchbook, Sparkle with its perpetual, silent grin.
“Almost done with this one, Sparkle,” Lily whispered, adding a final flourish of charcoal to the shadows beneath the balcony. “Mrs. Gable will love it. She always says my drawings capture the ‘soul’ of the buildings.”
