The scent of ripening cheese, a familiar comfort to Nikos, usually settled him. Today, it felt like a cage. He ran a calloused thumb over a wheel of his finest aged cheddar, its rind a testament to years of patient turning and watchful tending. Yet, his mind was far from the cool, dark cellar. It was up in Elara’s small cottage, where the air, he imagined, was alive with something far more potent than lactic acid.
He’d seen her that morning, walking by the fields, her stride light, her dark hair catching the sun like spun obsidian. She wore a simple linen dress, but to Nikos, it was a garment of exquisite allure. He’d felt a familiar tremor, a thrumming beneath his ribs that had become his constant companion since the night he’d first tasted… well, since he’d first experienced Elara. The memory, still potent, sent a blush creeping up his weathered neck.
It had been a week since their last clandestine meeting, a week of stolen glances and hushed conversations that left him aching for more. The ginseng oil, that tiny vial of dark amber liquid Elara had so casually gifted him, had been the catalyst, of course. But it was Elara herself, her laughter like wind chimes, her eyes holding galaxies of unspoken knowledge, who had truly ignited the fire. He’d poured a drop into his evening wine, expecting nothing more than a pleasant warmth, and instead, had found himself consumed by a desire so fierce, so pure, it had driven him, almost against his will, to her door.
