Chapter 4
A Taste of Desire: The First Encounter
The scent of woodsmoke and damp earth was the usual perfume of Karvides, a comforting, familiar blanket woven from generations of life lived close to the soil. But lately, a new fragrance had begun to mingle with the old, something akin to wildflowers after a spring rain, laced with an almost imperceptible sweetness that tickled the back of the throat. It was Elara, the new teacher, and her presence was like a gentle breeze disturbing the still surface of the village pond.
Nikos, his hands dusted with the fine powder of aged cheese, felt the ripple of that breeze deep within him. He’d watched her arrive, a splash of vibrant color against the muted palette of Karvides, her laughter like the chime of distant bells. He’d seen her in the village square, her eyes, the color of moss after a rain, taking in everything and nothing all at once. He’d even found himself lingering by the schoolhouse, ostensibly to deliver a small wheel of his finest goat cheese as a welcoming gift, but really, he knew, to catch a glimpse of her, to hear the cadence of her voice as she spoke with the children.
It was on one such pretext, a few days after her arrival, that he’d found himself near the small cottage she rented on the edge of the village. A stray kitten, thin and mewling, had darted across her path, and Elara, with a grace that belied her city origins, had stooped to scoop it up, murmuring soft reassurances. Nikos, hidden by the shade of an ancient oak, had felt a pang, a sudden, unexpected yearning that had surprised him with its intensity. He was a man of routine, of predictable rhythms. His days were measured by the turning of milk, the aging of cheese, the quiet hum of village life. Love, in its more turbulent forms, was a story he’d read in books, not something he expected to find stirring in the depths of his own contented existence.
