My brain felt like a popcorn machine that had gone rogue. Every kernel was popping at once, a chaotic symphony of feelings and thoughts that weren’t even mine. It was like trying to listen to a hundred different radio stations at the same time, all blasting their own brand of crazy. And the worst part? Most of it was just *noise*. Mr. Henderson’s cat, Whiskers, was sending out waves of pure, unadulterated disdain for a particularly fluffy dandelion. Mrs. Gable, three streets over, was humming a tune that sounded suspiciously like a kazoo solo played through a drainpipe, and a flock of pigeons was having an existential crisis about the best way to land on a statue. Oh, and somewhere in the distance, a toddler was practicing a scream that could shatter glass. Yep, just a normal Tuesday.

“Seriously, Leo,” I groaned, shoving my hands into my pockets. “Can’t we find a quiet place? Like, a soundproof box? Or maybe a deserted island with no one else ever having lived there?”

Leo, bless his video-game-addled heart, was practically bouncing beside me. “But Elara, this is the *investigation* part! We’re going where the spooky stuff happened! Imagine,” he whispered, eyes wide and sparkling, “we could find, like, spectral fingerprints! Or a ghost rave!”
