My brain felt like a pinball machine that had been plugged into a lightning storm. Every stray thought, every stray *feeling*, was bouncing around, pinging off the bumpers of my skull with a deafening *clatter-bang-WHOOSH!* Honestly, sometimes I wished my superpower would just pack a tiny suitcase and go on a very, very long vacation to a place with absolutely no feelings, like a rock. Or maybe a particularly stoic potato.
“Seriously, Elara, you’re staring at that dust bunny like it just insulted your entire lineage,” Leo said, nudging me with his elbow. He was perched on the edge of the town’s dusty, forgotten storage room, his eyes glued to his tablet. Leo’s brain, bless its enthusiastic heart, was usually a well-organized library. Mine? More like a chaotic thrift store where all the price tags had fallen off.
“It *did*,” I mumbled, trying to focus on the dust bunny and not the overwhelming wave of boredom emanating from Mrs. Higgins across the street, who was currently contemplating the existential dread of a slightly wilted petunia. “It’s judging my life choices. And frankly, it’s right.”
