Elara stood on a rocky outcrop, her fingers tracing the worn leather of her satchel, the weight of her cartographer’s tools a familiar comfort against the gnawing anxiety. Beside her, Kael’s stance was coiled, his gaze sweeping the desolate landscape with a practiced intensity. The sky above was a bruised purple, streaked with angry veins of ochre, a reflection of the turmoil brewing below. Even the wind seemed to writhe, carrying with it the scent of ozone and something else, something ancient and wild.
“This is it,” Kael murmured, his voice low and rough, barely audible above the wind’s lament. “The convergence. Eldrin’s scribbles were accurate, for once.”
