Chapter 40
Episode 40
I really and truly hope that what I have written about Malad and Malad Valley gives You,the reader,a new perspective and outlook and that You can appreciate what both sides endured. With the greatest of respect,Amy Kathryn Allen
The dust settled, not just on the worn floorboards of the Dude Ranch Cafe, but in the minds of those who had journeyed with me through the rugged heart of Malad Valley. Years have spun themselves into the tapestry of time since Douglas McKenzie and his French Canadian trappers first cast their shadows upon this untamed land. Their story, a testament to human resilience and the indomitable will to survive, has been etched into the very soul of this place. It is a narrative woven with the biting winds that sweep down from the peaks, the deceptive shimmer of the Malad River, and the deep, abiding spirit of the Shoshone Bannock, the original stewards of this wild domain.
My own journey, much like theirs, has been one of discovery, of confronting the harsh realities and the hidden beauties that coexist in this rugged landscape. The Dude Ranch Cafe, a beacon of warmth and welcome in the small town of Malad, has been my sanctuary, the place where the whispers of the past coalesce into stories waiting to be told. The photographs adorning its walls, faded testaments to generations of cowboys and rodeo stars, have served as silent witnesses to my own contemplation. It was in my favorite booth, the one with the rodeo rider’s weathered grin, that the idea for these novels truly took root, nurtured by the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the comforting presence of homemade pie.
The significance of Malad Valley, I’ve come to understand, lies not just in its dramatic landscapes or its historical encounters, but in the lessons it imparts. It teaches us about the unyielding tenacity required to carve a life from unforgiving earth, about the courage it takes to face the unknown, and about the profound respect owed to those who have always called this land home. The schoolchildren of Malad learn this history, not as dry facts in a textbook, but as a living legacy, a story of brave souls, both indigenous and settler, who forged their futures against formidable odds. They learn of the Shoshone Bannock’s proud nobility, their fierce spirit, and their deep connection to the land that continues to shape their own future.
