My remembrance poem for Chief Washakie
Washakie, wise and ancient, a leader of the Eastern Shoshone, His spirit woven with the land, his wisdom deeply sown. He saw the fur traders’ arrival, a ripple on the stream, And heard the distant thunder of a changing, waking dream.
While Pocatello’s fury burned, a warrior’s righteous fire, And Bear Hunter watched with keenest eye, his people’s deep desire To keep their sacred valleys free, from trespass and from strife, Washakie sought a different path, a way to save their life.
He understood the currents strong, the tide that could not cease, The coming of the settlers’ boots, disturbing nature’s peace. He saw the traps, the muskets’ gleam, the foreign, probing hand, And knew that war, though brave and bold, might scar this ancient land.
