Lillypad’s eyelids fluttered open, the soft morning light filtering through her curtains. The dream of Cathy, the majestic star cat, still shimmered in the edges of her mind, a warm, comforting echo. Cathy’s words, about the twenty tasks and the twenty wishes, felt as real as the pillow beneath her head. But the dream also held a quiet reminder: the tasks were not just about receiving, but about giving, about growing. The eighth task, Cathy had whispered in the dream, was to help her parents with a chore, without being asked. A simple task, perhaps, but one that felt surprisingly weighty.

She slipped out of bed, her bare feet silent on the wooden floor. The house was still quiet, a peaceful hum of slumber. Lillypad padded towards the kitchen, her mind already sifting through the usual morning routines. Her mother usually made breakfast, her father would be reading the paper. What chore could she tackle without being told? Her gaze fell on the overflowing recycling bin by the back door. It was a constant battle, that bin. Every week, it seemed to fill up again impossibly fast.

A little smile touched Lillypad’s lips. That was it. She could take the recycling out. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was definitely a chore. And her parents were always grateful when it was done. She tiptoed to the bin, wrestling with the large cardboard box that held empty cereal packets and juice cartons. It was heavier than it looked, and a stray plastic bottle clattered to the floor. She quickly scooped it up, a tiny thrill of accomplishment bubbling within her. She was already helping, already doing the task.
