Creeping Towards the Tree

Heartbeats drumming, the five children cautiously unzip the tent. They move slowly towards the imposing tree, James leading the way. Every snapping twig and distant hoot amplifies their fear.

The canvas of the tent, once a comforting shell against the encroaching dusk, now felt like a flimsy barrier between them and the unknown. Anastasia, her usual bravado dimmed by the prickle of unease, met Sofia’s wide, questioning eyes. Milo, usually buzzing with an irrepressible energy, was unusually still, her small hands clasped tightly together. James, ever the pragmatist, had already begun to unlatch the zipper, his brow furrowed in concentration. Tom, his normally cheerful face pale, huddled closer to James, his gaze darting nervously towards the tent’s entrance.

“Are we really going to do this?” Sofia whispered, her voice barely audible above the thumping of her own heart.

Anastasia swallowed, the lump in her throat feeling enormous. She’d spun tales of ghouls and goblins, of shadowy figures lurking just beyond the firelight, but this… this felt different. This felt real. “We have to,” she said, trying to inject a confidence she didn’t quite feel into her tone. “We can’t just sit here and be scared, can we?”
