The spell finally consumes Amber, silencing her old self. She is forced to accept her destiny as the Ghost Queen, forever bound as Nico's puppet, her will subjugated.
The cold seeped into my bones, a chill that had nothing to do with the icy wind whistling through the cracks in my bedroom window. It was a deeper cold, a hollowness that echoed in the empty spaces where my thoughts used to be. Nico’s laughter, a sound like shards of glass tinkling in a freezer, played on repeat in my mind. He’d promised me understanding, control, a way to stem the tide of chaos that was tearing the world apart. And I’d believed him. Foolish, naive Amber.
Now, there was only the echo. The old Amber, the one who’d loved the smell of rain on hot pavement and the feel of her mother’s hand in hers, was fading. She was a flicker, a dying ember struggling against an encroaching blizzard. I could feel her, a faint warmth in the vast emptiness, whispering pleas that were growing fainter with each passing moment. *Don’t let him… don’t forget…*
Nico stood before me, a silhouette against the swirling dust outside. He hadn’t bothered with the pretense of charm for a long time. His eyes, once like polished obsidian, now glinted with a raw, predatory hunger. He’d shed the mask of the benevolent king, revealing the skeletal hand that gripped my soul.
