The edges of my vision had begun to blur, not with tears, but with a creeping, inky haze that seemed to bleed in from the corners of the world. It was like watching a photograph fade in direct sunlight, only instead of light, it was the vibrant hues of my own heart that were being leached away. Nico’s lessons had become more demanding, his words sharper, his touch colder. He’d started by showing me how to *feel* the storms, how to sense their raw, untamed energy swirling in the atmosphere. Now, he wanted me to *command* them.
“Focus, Amber,” his voice, once a silken caress, now held a brittle edge, like ice threatening to shatter. “The wind answers to will. Your will.”
I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to summon the image of a gentle breeze, the kind that rustled leaves and carried the scent of rain. Instead, I saw a tempest, a furious maelstrom of wind and debris tearing through a town that looked eerily like ours. A cold dread coiled in my stomach. This wasn’t understanding; this was destruction.
