The Everlasting Silence
Amber makes a choice, either succumbing fully to Nico's control or finding a way to break free, accepting the consequences. The world watches as her fate, and perhaps its own, is sealed.
The air in the cavern was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something metallic and cold, like old blood. It clung to the back of my throat, a constant, unwelcome reminder of where I was, and what I had become. Nico’s eyes, usually pools of shifting darkness, were now molten gold, burning with an intensity that made me recoil. He stood before me, not the charming king of ghosts who’d offered me solace, but a predator, his patience worn thin, his true nature laid bare.
“You have resisted long enough, Amber,” his voice, once a silken caress, was now a rasp of command, each syllable a lash. “The world trembles, and you cling to your… sentimentality. It is a weakness I will no longer tolerate.”
I flinched, the words striking deeper than any physical blow. Sentimentality. Was that all my kindness was to him? A weakness? My mind flashed back to Mom’s worried frown as she’d watched the news, the tremor in Dad’s voice as he’d spoken of the rising tides near Aunt Carol’s town. These were the people I’d sworn to protect, the reason I’d even listened to Nico in the first place. Now, his promises of control, of understanding, felt like ashes in my mouth.
