The air in my room, usually thick with the scent of old books and the faint, lingering perfume of my mother’s lavender sachets, felt thin, brittle. It was a strange sensation, like breathing through a sieve. Outside, the wind howled, a low, mournful dirge that rattled the windowpanes, a constant reminder of the world’s unraveling. I traced the condensation on the glass, my breath misting the pane, obscuring the angry, bruised sky. How could I explain? How could I tell her that the world was tearing itself apart, not just outside, but inside me too? That the whispers in the wind were not just sounds, but voices, and that the king of those voices was slowly, insidiously, weaving himself into the fabric of my being?
