Elara moved with a caution born of instinct, her bare feet sinking slightly into the mossy ground. Each step felt like a trespass, a violation of a sacred silence. Behind her, the Serpent, a shimmering coil of pure, contained light, pulsed with a nervous energy. Its usual steady hum, a comforting vibration that Elara felt deep in her bones, was now a hesitant stutter, like a dying ember struggling to catch flame.

She reached out a hand, her fingers brushing against a cluster of fungi that glowed with an eerie, sickly green. They were unlike any she had seen before, their caps bloated and translucent, emitting a faint, phosphorescent aura that seemed to drain the color from the surrounding flora. This was the blight, she realized with a chill that had nothing to do with the grove’s perpetual twilight. It wasn't just a wilting; it was a consumption, a parasitic embrace that fed on life itself.

"Serpent," she whispered, her voice barely audible, "do you feel it?"
