The air in Sergei Ivanov’s archive was thick with the scent of aging paper and forgotten dust, a perfume that usually soothed Anya Petrova’s frayed nerves. Today, however, it felt suffocating, heavy with the weight of revelation. The ancient texts, laid out on the scarred oak table between her and Mikhail, seemed to pulse with a life of their own, their faded ink whispering secrets that defied every logical equation she’d ever formulated. The word "pact" loomed large, stark and terrifying, not as a metaphor for a historical agreement, but as a literal, binding contract with something… other.

“It’s not a war, Anya,” Mikhail said, his voice hushed, reverent. He traced a jagged symbol on a brittle parchment with a fingertip that trembled slightly. “We can’t fight it. Not like this.”

Anya stared at the symbol, a knot tightening in her stomach. Her mind, trained to find patterns, to quantify risk, to predict outcomes based on established parameters, was rebelling. The statistical anomalies she’d meticulously logged – the inexplicable surges in minor accidents, the sudden shifts in public mood, the unsettling synchronicity of otherwise random events – were not errors in the data. They were symptoms. Symptoms of a world unraveling.
