The air in Sergei’s archive was thick with the scent of aging paper and the faint, metallic tang of something ancient, something that had slumbered for centuries. Anya, usually so grounded in the sterile logic of numbers, felt it too, a palpable weight settling on her shoulders. The immediate crisis, the terrifying manifestation of the entity, had receded. The desperate, improbable ritual they had performed, a frantic weaving of Anya’s statistical models with Mikhail’s deep well of folklore, had worked. But “worked” felt like a fragile, temporary state, like a perfectly balanced equation that could tip at any moment.

Mikhail, his face etched with a mixture of exhaustion and wonder, ran a hand over a leather-bound tome, its pages brittle with age. “It’s… quiet,” he murmured, his voice hoarse. “The echoes… they’ve settled.”

Anya nodded, her gaze fixed on a spectral diagram on one of the pages, a complex interplay of symbols that seemed to thrum with residual energy. “The statistical anomalies have returned to baseline. The probabilities are… normal. For now.” The word “normal” felt alien on her tongue. What was normal anymore? Had they simply lulled a hungry beast, or had they truly negotiated a new accord?
