Chapter 15
The New Default
The 'default' state of humanity has been irrevocably altered. The veil between worlds is thinner, and the echoes of the past are now a recognized part of their present. Life continues, but with an underlying awareness of the supernatural.
The air still hummed with the phantom residue of what had transpired. It wasn’t a scent, not a sound, but a palpable shift, a subtle recalibration of the world’s machinery. Anya Petrova, sitting at her usual desk, the one cluttered with graphs and printouts that now seemed quaintly obsolete, felt it most keenly. The statistical models that had once been her sanctuary, her rigid framework for understanding chaos, now felt like children’s drawings of a hurricane. They could predict the wind speed, perhaps, but they couldn’t capture the sheer, terrifying otherness of the storm’s eye.
The “default” state, as she’d so clinically termed it, had been irrevocably altered. The thin, gossamer veil that separated the mundane from the… well, from that, had been torn, not ripped, but stretched, made permeable. The echoes of the forgotten were no longer whispers in the data; they were a chorus, a constant, low thrum beneath the surface of everyday life. Anya traced a line on a spreadsheet, a meaningless string of numbers now, and sighed. The world hadn’t ended, not in the cataclysmic way the doomsayers had predicted. Instead, it had simply… adapted. Or rather, they had been forced to adapt.
Outside her window, the usual morning bustle of the city unfolded. People hurried to work, children were shepherded to school, the rhythm of urban existence seemed to beat on, oblivious. But Anya saw it. She saw the flicker of unease in the eyes of a woman clutching her bag a little tighter as she passed a shadowy alleyway, the way a man instinctively checked over his shoulder at the rustle of leaves that wasn’t there. These weren't anxieties born of crime statistics or economic forecasts. These were primal anxieties, nudged awake by the lingering scent of something ancient and hungry.
