Elara traced the intricate carving on the oak paneling, her fingers seeking a familiar texture that eluded her grasp. Agnes had warned her, her voice a low murmur against the rustle of her worn shawl, that the serpent’s coil tightened around those who dared to disturb its slumber. Now, Elara understood.

The diary, bound in cracked leather, had spoken of the “Chronicle Keepers,” a society sworn to safeguard knowledge, but also to manipulate it. Her ancestors, it hinted, had been guardians of a truth too powerful for ordinary eyes, a truth that had been systematically buried.
