The air in Agnes’s small study always smelled of dried lavender and old paper, a comforting scent that usually settled Elara’s nerves. But today, it felt cloying, thick with an unspoken tension. Agnes sat opposite her, her usual warm smile replaced by a furrowed brow, her fingers steepled as if holding back a tidal wave of words. Elara watched her, a knot of unease tightening in her stomach. The chase through the city had been terrifying, the shadowy figure’s relentless pursuit a stark reminder of the danger she was in. But this feeling, this creeping suspicion now blooming in Agnes’s quiet study, felt far more insidious.
"Agnes," Elara began, her voice barely a whisper, "you said… you said you knew my parents. That you were friends with my mother."
Agnes nodded slowly, her gaze fixed on a point just beyond Elara’s shoulder. "Yes, dear. Eleanor was a dear friend. A brilliant woman. She… she trusted me.” A pause stretched, heavy and suffocating. “She trusted me with many things.”
