The air in the abandoned warehouse hung thick and heavy, smelling of dust, damp concrete, and something else… something metallic and faintly acrid, like old pennies. Elara’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the unnerving silence. She pressed herself deeper into the shadows cast by a towering stack of forgotten crates, her breath held tight in her chest. Every creak of the decaying structure, every rustle of wind outside, seemed amplified, a potential betrayer. This was it. The meeting Agnes had spoken of, the one Elias Thorne himself would attend. A meeting where, if Elara could only get close enough, she might overhear the secrets that had eluded her for so long.

Agnes’s instructions had been precise, delivered in a hushed whisper an hour before, her hand gripping Elara’s with a surprising strength. "They meet in the old dockside warehouses, Elara. The third one from the end. Thorne will be there. Listen carefully. Do not engage. If you are seen, run. Your survival is paramount." Agnes’s eyes, usually so calm and knowing, had held a flicker of raw fear, a testament to the danger Elara was willingly stepping into.

Now, crouched in the gloom, Elara strained her ears. Footsteps. Heavy, measured, echoing on the concrete floor. Then voices, low and guttural, rising and falling like a tide. She couldn’t make out words, only the tone – a chilling blend of authority and veiled menace. A sliver of light, from a gap in the corrugated iron walls, illuminated a small clearing in the center of the vast space. Figures began to emerge from the deeper shadows, men mostly, their faces obscured by the dimness, their postures radiating a grim purpose.
