The air in the old family estate hung thick with the scent of dust and forgotten time. Sunlight, strained through grimy windowpanes, painted hazy stripes across the worn Persian rugs and the silent, watchful portraits lining the grand staircase. Elara moved through the echoing halls like a ghost herself, her footsteps muffled by the thick carpets, her breath catching in her throat with every creak of the ancient floorboards. This was Blackwood Manor, a place that felt both intimately familiar and utterly alien, a repository of memories she could only grasp at like wisps of smoke.

She’d found the estate listed in a faded ledger tucked away in the library, a place marked with a cryptic symbol that had snagged her attention. The diary entries had spoken of it, of a place where ‘the roots of our legacy run deepest.’ Now, standing in its echoing silence, she understood why. Every shadowed corner, every peeling wallpaper pattern, seemed to whisper stories she strained to hear.

She imagined hands, long gone, resting here, perhaps writing the very words that had set her on this path. A sudden chill snaked down her spine, not from the temperature, but from a fleeting image that flickered behind her eyes: a woman’s hand, elegant and ringed, dipping a quill into an inkwell. The ink was a deep, vibrant blue, unlike any she’d seen before. It was gone as quickly as it came, leaving her with a familiar ache of loss, a yearning for something just out of reach.
