The air in the antique shop was thick with the scent of old paper and polished wood, a comforting aroma that usually soothed Elara. Today, however, it felt stifling, each mote of dust dancing in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the gloom seeming to carry a forgotten secret. She traced the cool, smooth surface of a mahogany dresser, her fingers seeking solace in its familiar grain. But the quiet hum of the shop, usually a balm, was a low thrum of unease beneath her skin, a subtle dissonance that had been growing for days.
It had started with small things, almost imperceptible. A fleeting scent of lavender when none was present, a whisper of a melody that dissolved before she could grasp it, the unsettling feeling of being watched when she was utterly alone. Then came the dreams, vivid and disorienting, fragments of a life that felt both hers and utterly alien. A woman’s face, blurred by tears or distance, a child’s laughter echoing in an empty hallway, the chilling sensation of cold metal against her skin.
