Chapter 6

Beneath the Surface

The scent of old paper and dust motes dancing in the slivers of sunlight filtering through the grimy window panes was a familiar comfort to Elara. It was the smell of her sanctuary, the small, cluttered study tucked away at the back of the antique shop. She ran a fingertip over the spine of a leather-bound volume, its gold lettering faded to an illegible whisper. Could he be connected to the fragmented images that sometimes flickered at the edges of her consciousness – a child’s laughter, the scent of rain on warm earth, a woman’s gentle touch? The fragments were too fleeting, too elusive to grasp, always dissolving like mist the moment she tried to hold onto them.
