The air in Elias’s study was thick with the scent of old paper and pipe tobacco, a comforting aroma that usually settled Elara’s restless spirit. Tonight, however, it felt suffocating, each inhale a reminder of the questions that clung to her like the dust motes dancing in the single lamp’s glow. Elias sat behind his imposing oak desk, his gaze fixed on the worn leather-bound book open before him. His silver hair was a halo in the dim light, but his usual gentle smile was absent, replaced by a furrowed brow that mirrored the turmoil in Elara’s own heart.

“You’re quiet tonight, Elara,” Elias finally said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the very floorboards. He closed the book with a soft thud, the sound echoing in the silence.

Elara leaned forward, her fingers tracing the intricate patterns on the armrest of her chair. “I… I keep thinking about what happened at the market yesterday. The way that woman looked at me.”
