Chapter 6
The Engineer's Secret
The air in the dusty workshop tasted of metal and old oil, a familiar scent that always made Anya feel a little bit braver. Sunlight, thin and pale, slanted through the grimy panes, illuminating motes of dust dancing like tiny sprites. Elara, her grandfather, hunched over the motorcycle, his brow furrowed in concentration. The magnificent machine, the Dust Road Legacy, sat before them, a magnificent beast of chrome and faded paint, its sidecar a silent promise. It was more than just metal; it was a vessel of hope, a legend brought to life.

Anya watched him, a knot of anxiety and excitement tightening in her chest. She loved these moments, these quiet times with her grandfather, surrounded by the remnants of a world she only knew from his stories. He’d told her about the time before the Great Drying, when the sky was a vibrant blue and the earth hummed with life. He’d spoken of cities that reached for the clouds and machines that flew through the air. And always, he’d spoken of the Dust Road Legacy, a motorcycle built for a different age, a time when people dreamed of progress and not just survival.
