Beneath the Crimson Sky
The sky bled a deep, bruised crimson as Anya squinted, shielding her eyes with a grimy hand. The sun, a distant, angry eye, beat down relentlessly, baking the already cracked earth into a mosaic of dust and despair. Their little settlement, a cluster of patched-up shelters huddled against the relentless wind, seemed to shrink under the vast, indifferent expanse. Anya’s grandfather, Elara, sat on an upturned crate outside their dwelling, his fingers tracing patterns in the dust, his gaze fixed on the shimmering horizon. He’d been quiet for days, a heavy silence that pressed down on Anya’s chest.
“Grandpa?” she whispered, her voice raspy.
He turned, his kind eyes, usually alight with stories, now clouded with a weariness that went bone-deep. “Anya, child. The well is almost dry.”
