The air in the cavern thrummed with a tension that Elara felt in her very bones, a wild, discordant symphony played by the sorcerer’s words. Valerius stood before her, his gaunt face etched with a fanaticism that chilled her more than the mountain wind. The flickering torchlight cast monstrous shadows that danced and writhed on the rough-hewn walls, mirroring the turmoil blooming within her. Ignis, usually a vibrant presence at her side, was a low rumble in her chest, a silent, anxious tremor against her heart.

“The price,” Valerius repeated, his voice raspy, like stones grinding together. “You ask about the price, child? It is a steep one, indeed.” He gestured with a skeletal hand towards a swirling vortex of arcane energy that shimmered in the center of the chamber, a nascent storm of raw power. “The Great Wyrm, the one who sleeps beneath the world, demands a sacrifice of immense magnitude to be awakened. It craves life, potent and vibrant, to break the chains of its slumber.”

Elara’s breath hitched. “Lives? You mean… people?” The words felt like ash in her mouth. She thought of her mother’s gentle smile, her father’s booming laugh, the boisterous camaraderie of the village market. All of them, fodder for some ancient, insatiable hunger?
