The air in Carter’s small room still hummed with the unsettling melody of the wolf’s cry. It wasn't the familiar, mournful song of the local packs, nor the sharp, territorial yelps he’d sometimes heard echoing from the deeper woods. This was something else entirely, a sound that seemed to vibrate not just in his ears, but in the very marrow of his bones. He’d tried to dismiss it, to chalk it up to an overactive imagination fueled by the preceding days’ strange events. But the image of the wolf, its fur like spun moonlight and its eyes holding an ancient, sorrowful intelligence, was seared into his mind.

He sat up, the rough wool blanket falling away, and swung his legs over the side of the bed. The floorboards creaked a protest, a sound that felt amplified in the oppressive silence of the night. Moonlight, a pale, ethereal wash, slanted through the window, painting stripes across his worn rug. The woods beyond his small clearing beckoned, a dark, impenetrable wall of shadow and secrets. A shiver, not entirely of cold, traced its way down his spine. He knew, with a certainty that defied logic, that the wolf was out there, waiting.

His gaze drifted to the corner of the room where the wolf now lay, a silent, breathing presence. The makeshift bed of old blankets and pine boughs was a stark contrast to the wild creature it housed, but the wolf seemed to accept it with a quiet dignity. Its breathing was shallow but steady, and the ragged edges of its wounds showed signs of healing, thanks to the poultices Carter had painstakingly prepared. The strange markings, intricate and swirling like ancient runes, seemed to pulse faintly in the dim light, a testament to its otherworldly nature.
