Chapter 15
A Test of Courage
The threat to the forest escalates, forcing Carter to take a more active role. He must use his resourcefulness and newfound understanding to protect the wolf and the ancient woods.
The air in Carter’s small cabin felt thick, heavy with the unspoken anxieties that had settled like dust after Old Man Hemlock’s grim pronouncements. The wolf, now a constant, silent presence in the shadows of his mind, was more than just an injured animal; it was a beacon, drawing unseen forces closer. Carter had spent the last few days in a state of heightened awareness, his senses attuned to the rustling leaves, the snapping twigs, the almost imperceptible shifts in the forest’s mood.
He found himself pacing the worn floorboards, the wolf’s labored breathing a phantom echo in his ears. Elara’s words, calm and measured, replayed in his thoughts: "The forest is a living entity, Carter. It breathes, it feels, and it defends itself. This creature… it is a part of that defense." The wound on its flank, a deep, ragged tear, had closed considerably, thanks to the poultices Carter had diligently prepared. Shadow’s amber eyes, once filled with a desperate pain, now held a wary intelligence, a flicker of something akin to gratitude when Carter approached with fresh water or a bit of dried venison. The creature had not spoken in words, of course, but a silent communication had begun, a subtle exchange of trust and understanding that transcended the boundaries of species.
