The morning air, crisp and washed clean by the night’s unexpected chill, did little to dispel the unease that had settled in Carter’s gut. The wolf, a creature of shadow and myth now resting in a bed of hastily gathered straw in his barn, was a constant, silent presence. Its breath, a soft, rhythmic puff, was a stark contrast to the urgent, alien howl that had ripped through the night. That howl, he realized now, had been a cry of pain, a desperate plea. Looking at the creature before him, the deep gashes on its flank, the dullness in its once vibrant amber eyes, he knew it was more than just an injured animal.

He’d spent the early hours tending to its wounds, his hands surprisingly steady as he cleaned the torn flesh and applied the poultices Elara had helped him prepare. The markings on its fur, intricate and swirling like ancient runes, seemed to pulse with a faint, internal luminescence when the barn light caught them just right. They were unlike anything he’d ever seen, not the familiar patterns of the local wildlife, nor the crude carvings he’d once stumbled upon deep in the woods. This was something older, something imbued with a significance that prickled at the edges of his understanding.

The wolf, for its part, bore his ministrations with a stoic, almost regal tolerance. It didn't snap or growl, only watched him with an unnerving intelligence, its gaze seeming to probe the depths of his intentions. There were moments, fleeting as a moth’s wingbeat, when Carter felt a profound connection, a silent conversation passing between them, a shared understanding that transcended the boundaries of species. It was this connection, this inexplicable pull, that had led him to risk the scorn of Old Man Hemlock and the whispers of the villagers.
