It was a scent that spoke of hushed consultations and worried whispers, a stark contrast to the earthy aroma of damp soil and pine needles that usually filled her lungs back home. Leo, his small body still unnervingly still against her chest, felt fragile, a bird with a broken wing. His fever had spiked again overnight, a relentless tide that refused to recede, and the local doctor, a kind but overworked woman named Dr. Elena, had finally suggested a referral to the regional hospital.
“He needs more specialized care, Anya,” Dr. Elena had said, her voice gentle but firm, her eyes reflecting a weariness Anya was beginning to recognize in the faces of so many in their small corner of Lithuania. “The tests we’ve run here… they aren’t giving us a clear picture. We need to rule out more serious infections.”
Anya nodded, her throat tight. Rule out. The words themselves were a cold comfort. They implied possibilities she didn’t want to consider, a darkness that lurked just beyond the edges of her simple life. She smoothed Leo’s damp hair, feeling the thinness of his skin, the frantic beat of his tiny heart against her own. This was not how it was supposed to be. Leo was supposed to be her joy, her reason, her vibrant, laughing boy, not this pale, listless shadow.
