Chapter 5
The Night of the Nervous System: A desperate flight and a fight for survival.
The air in Anya’s small cottage grew thick, heavy with an unspoken dread that had been simmering for weeks. Leo, her bright, curious Leo, tossed and turned in his sleep, his brow furrowed, his breathing shallow and ragged. Anya sat by his bedside, her hand cool against his feverish forehead, the faint scent of woodsmoke and damp earth clinging to her skin. Outside, the Lithuanian night was a vast, inky canvas, punctuated by the distant hoot of an owl and the rustling of unseen creatures in the overgrown meadow. This quiet, once a balm, now felt like a suffocating blanket, pressing down on her.
The doctor’s words, delivered with a weary sigh in the sparsely equipped local clinic, echoed in her mind. “We don’t have the specialists for this, Anya. Not here. You’ll need to go to the city. Kaunas.” Kaunas. A world away, a place of gleaming buildings and hurried people, a place that felt as alien to her as the moon. The journey itself was a mountain to climb, a tangle of bus schedules and the gnawing fear of leaving Leo’s side, even for a moment. And the cost… the cost was a chasm she wasn’t sure she could bridge. The clinic, with its peeling paint and the hushed, almost apologetic tone of the nurses, was a stark reminder of the broken threads of their healthcare system, a system that seemed to offer little comfort to those who needed it most.
Anya smoothed Leo’s hair, the soft strands like spun moonlight against her fingers. His small hand clenched reflexively, a tiny tremor running through it. It wasn't just the fever. It was something deeper, a fear that mirrored her own. The whispers that had begun as hushed gossip in the village square had grown louder, more insistent, weaving a tapestry of unease. Talk of missing children, of shadows that lingered too long, of a darkness that had begun to seep into the edges of their familiar world. Viktor Volkov, with his smooth pronouncements and eyes that never quite met hers, had been a constant, unsettling presence, offering help, offering advice, his words like a silken net, tightening around her. She’d felt it before, that prickle of danger, a cold dread that settled in her gut, but now, with Leo so frail, it was a palpable, suffocating terror.
