Chapter 8
A Flicker of Hope
The counter's true function begins to reveal itself. It's not just a record, but a measure of inner strength that can push back the darkness.
The air in Elara’s small room felt thick, heavy with the unspoken weight of the encroaching shadows. Outside, the village of Oakhaven slept fitfully, its inhabitants each carrying their own silent anxieties. But Elara’s mind was wide awake, her gaze fixed on the ancient counter that sat on her worn wooden table. Its brass numbers, once dull with age, now seemed to gleam with a faint, internal light. She had spent days poring over the tattered fragments of the old book, her fingers tracing the faded ink, her heart pounding with a mix of hope and dread.
Elder Maeve’s words echoed in her mind: "The counter does not merely tally what is lost, child. It measures what remains, what fights back." Elara had initially dismissed them as the ramblings of an old woman, but as she pieced together the fragmented verses, a new understanding began to dawn. The counter wasn't counting the souls the Shadow Weaver claimed; it was counting something else entirely. Something that pulsed and swelled, a hidden wellspring of resilience.
She remembered the day she’d found it, tucked away in the dusty attic of her grandmother’s cottage, a forgotten relic amidst generations of accumulated memories. It was heavy, intricately carved with symbols she didn’t recognize, and the numbers, at first glance, seemed meaningless, a jumble of digits that shifted and changed with an unsettling rhythm. But the old book spoke of a "heartwood of courage," of a "slight of the spirit" that could withstand even the most fearsome darkness. And the counter, she now suspected, was measuring precisely that.
