Chapter 6
Fragments of Truth
Elara discovers a brittle, ancient book filled with fragmented text. She believes it holds the key to understanding the counter's strange readings.
The air in the forgotten corner of Elder Maeve’s study was thick with the scent of aged paper and the faint, sweet perfume of dried flowers. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating Elara’s determined face. She ran a reverent finger over the cover of the book before her. It was unlike any she had ever seen, bound in what felt like cracked leather, its pages brittle and yellowed, whispering secrets of a time long past. Elder Maeve had finally relented, trusting Elara with this hidden treasure, a collection of fragmented writings that she believed might hold the answers Elara sought.

Elara nodded, her heart thrumming with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. The counter, that strange, silent observer of their village’s dwindling light, had been her obsession since she’d discovered it. Its numbers had a rhythm all their own, a stark contrast to the ever-increasing tally of lost souls that hung heavy in the village square. This book, Elder Maeve had hinted, was connected to the counter, a key to unlocking its deeper meaning.
