Kael's Doubt
Elara confides in her friend Kael, a pragmatic hunter. He dismisses her fascination with the counter, worried about her obsession with the shadows.
Elara found Kael by the whispering river, his brow furrowed as he mended a fishing net, the afternoon sun glinting off the silver threads. The air, usually alive with the chirping of insects and the gentle rush of water, felt heavy, tinged with the same anxiety that had settled over their village like a persistent fog. Every day, the great stone counter in the village square clicked higher, each resonant thud a reminder of the encroaching shadow, the slow, silent theft of souls.
“Kael?” she began, her voice softer than she intended. She clutched the worn leather pouch containing her precious counter, its cool weight a familiar comfort against her hip.
He looked up, his eyes, usually so bright and full of laughter, held a shadow of their own. “Elara. Still chasing ghosts, are we?” His tone was light, but a subtle tension tightened his jaw. He knew, of course, about her obsession with the ancient device, the one she’d found hidden away in the dusty archives of the village hall.
