Chapter 4
Elder Maeve's Counsel
Elara seeks out Elder Maeve, the village wise woman. Maeve offers cryptic advice, hinting at forgotten lore and the counter's hidden purpose.
The air in Elara’s small cottage felt thick with unspoken fears, each tick of the village’s great ‘lost souls’ counter echoing in the silence. The numbers, stark and unyielding on the stone edifice in the village square, had climbed again that morning, a fresh tally of the creeping darkness. Elara traced the cool, smooth surface of the ancient counter she’d found hidden amongst the forgotten relics in her attic. Its digits, unlike the grim pronouncements of the village’s public marker, seemed to shimmer with a different kind of energy, a secret language only she was beginning to decipher. The weight of this secret, this strange fascination, pressed down on her, a familiar knot of anxiety tightening in her chest. Was her focus on this relic, this thing, what drew the shadows closer?
She knew where to turn. Elder Maeve, her hair a silver halo against the deepening twilight, resided in a cottage wreathed in climbing ivy, her windows glowing with the soft light of a hearth fire. Maeve was the keeper of stories, the living memory of their village, and her wisdom was a balm Elara desperately needed.
Pushing open the creaky wooden door, Elara was met with the comforting scent of dried herbs and woodsmoke. Elder Maeve sat by the fire, her hands busy with a spindle, her eyes, sharp and knowing, fixed on Elara. “You carry a heavy burden, child,” Maeve said, her voice like the rustle of ancient parchment. “The dust of forgotten things clings to you.”
